Summary:

We are seeking a qualified, experienced veterinarian who wants to make a difference in the lives of our clients and their animal companions, as well as, to contribute to the goals of the San Francisco SPCA. Interested professionals with proven medical skills, a commitment to teamwork, a positive attitude for problem solving and communication with our clients and staff, and the desire to learn and grow should apply.

Essential Duties and Functions:

Veterinary Medical Care

  • Coordinate and implement medical and general care protocols for the health and well-being of patients
  • Contribute to maintenance of current, sound veterinary medical practices, protocols and standards
  • Perform medical care for both shelter and publicly-owned patients and nurture interdepartmental cooperation in regards to their medical needs
  • Assess animal health using current diagnostic methods
  • Oversee surgical cases and develop treatment plans for hospitalized patients with varying degrees of medical complexity
  • Enhance professional knowledge and skills with a commitment to embracing opportunities for educational advancement through continuing education
  • Participate in daily medical rounds and take part in the established communication practices of our committed veterinary team
  • Phone support for overnight technicians
  • Comply with all laws pertaining to controlled drugs and work with our pharmacy staff to follow prescription protocols

Administrative Duties

  • Act as a liaison between departments within the SF SPCA and externally as our representative with the general public and others in the veterinary field
  • Work with our veterinary support staff to ensure clients are properly charged for services rendered according to Veterinary Hospital protocols
  • Provide unique charitable veterinary services in accordance with guidelines for SF SPCA Community Programs
  • Keep thorough and accurate medical records in compliance with all laws/regulations and collaborate with administrative staff to ensure proper collection of data

Staff Development

  • Assist with staff development through teaching, mentoring, communication and training
  • Encourage and stimulate interchange of medical knowledge by sharing professional experience and keep staff informed on the latest relevant medical techniques and information

Communication

  • Partner with clients to ensure the best treatment plan for each patient and to bond the client to our practice
  • Share veterinary knowledge, assistance and information to all departments of the Society
  • Ensure decisions, policies and procedures are effectively communicated for the well being of the patients, clients and staff
  • Facilitate good working relationships through professional demeanor, teamwork and collaboration
  • Maintain effective communication with staff during daily contact, in scheduled meetings, daily medical rounds, informally or in writing as needed to coordinate and direct medical functions of the hospital

Volunteers

  • Work cooperatively with all volunteers and recognize the talent and commitment they bring to the Society

Safety

  • Ensure a safe work environment by following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practices
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal, or the organization at risk

  • Facilitate open, direct communication throughout the Society.

Reporting Relationships and Contacts:

Reports to the Vice-President of Veterinary Services - Mission Hospital

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Regular standing, bending, stooping and crouching while seeing patients
  • Regular sitting at computer stations and operation of electronic equipment
  • Regularly moves about the campus to coordinate work
  • Frequent lifting, carrying animals weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in kennel area
  • Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals
  • Consistent exposure to animals in the workplace and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available

Education and Experience:

  • Graduated from an accredited veterinary medical college - DVM or equivalent
  • Licensed to practice in the State of California
  • Possession of a DEA registration number
  • Between 3 and 10 years of experience as a full-time practicing veterinarian

  • Demonstrated aptitude in clinical medicine and surgery
  • Demonstrated success in working with a diverse team of professionals, skilled in managing varied relationships and successful at facilitating collaboration and cooperation
  • Proficient in effective written and oral communication within a varied range of audiences and settings
  • Ability to mediate conflicts and give and receive feedback
  • Willingness to work the hours necessary to accomplish targeted responsibilities
  • Ability to delegate responsibility, achieve and measure results with team members
  • Commitment to practice excellent quality medicine and uphold the veterinary code of ethics

Salary and Benefits:

The starting salary for this position depends on the length and breadth of experience.
