Summary:

Responsible for client and animal care, adoptions, and representing the SF SPCA during the Macy’s Holiday Windows Pet Adoption Event.

 

Essential Duties and Functions:

 

People Care

  • Cultivate positive client, volunteer, and coworker, and Macy’s staff relations through professional, courteous, and educational interactions
  • Assist clients with animal adoptions; facilitate client/animal interactions to ensure a safe and pleasant experience
  • Interpret medical evaluations and behavioral assessments of dogs and cats to facilitate best match of client and animal
  • Counsel clients on medical, environmental, and behavioral needs of animals
  • Promote and facilitate enrollment in dog training classes
  • Practice and encourage the humane treatment of animals
  • Provide quality customer service to clients, volunteers, and staff while actively promoting our mission, services, programs, and events
  • Promote donation and giving opportunities
  • Maintain knowledge of Society programs and special events

 

Record Keeping

  • Complete necessary forms and data entry to process adoption of animals
  • Complete timely and accurate computer data entry tasks, ensure data integrity, using both paper and computer based filing systems

 

Financial Responsibility

  • Responsible for incoming monies and accurate handling of receipts and charge processing
  • When scheduled to do so, responsible for closing and balancing cash drawer and completing deposits

 

Facility Care

  • Ensure work areas are clean, orderly, and maintained daily
  • Represent The SF SPCA in a positive manner by professional personal appearance as well as appearance of work area.
  • Follow established disease control protocols to clean, disinfect, and maintain shelter apartments, kennels, cages, and general areas
  • Reports supply needs to supervisor

 

Animal Care

  • Maintains animal housing; performs cleaning duties
  • Reports health or behavior abnormalities to supervisor
  • Participate in stress and disease reduction efforts through purposeful and compassionate handling of animals in the store environment
  • Transport animals to and from the event site in Society vehicles

 

Volunteers

  • Work cooperatively with all volunteers and recognize the talent and commitment they bring to the Society

 

Safety

  • Ensure a safe work environment; following all safety guidelines, while modeling safe work practice
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk
  • Maintain a clean, healthy, and sanitary work area; follow all pest and rodent control protocols. Participate in keeping the SF SPCA campus clean and well maintained.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

 

  • Work is performed in a department store setting & outdoors
  • Work requires frequent bending, reaching, standing, and sitting in front of a computer 4-8 hrs per day
  • Exposure to disinfectant solutions when disinfecting cages and enclosures
  • Exposure to various weather conditions when working outdoors
  • Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations.
  • Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available

 

Reporting Relationships and Contacts:

  • Reports to Client Care Supervisors and Adoption Center Coordinator
  • Works closely with other departments, including volunteers

 

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Client service experience
  • Available to work weekends, evenings, holiday shifts, and overtime as needed
  • Available to work at three locations: Macy’s Union Square, SF SPCA Mission Campus, and SF SPCA Pacific Heights Campus

  • Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the San Francisco SPCA
  • Be highly motivated, out-going, flexible, patient, and service-oriented while maintaining a professional manner with the public at all times
  • Act as a team player, be able to work in a fast-paced environment, handling several tasks at once while maintaining poise and a courteous demeanor
  • Possess compassion for animals and be comfortable working in a shelter and Macy’s environment and willing to accommodate animals in the work place
  • Knowledge of animal breeds and behavior helpful
  • Computer skills in a Windows environment required
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish, English/Mandarin, and/or English/Cantonese) a plus
  • Valid California driver's license and a good driving record is a plus

Benefits

Salary and Benefits: 

The starting hourly rate for these positions is $14.00 per hour depending on experience. Seasonal positions are eligible for benefits provided by law.
