The Pharmacy and Lab Technician provides critical support to hospital staff and patients. This position is responsible for processing in-house laboratory testing; filling prescriptions; maintaining inventory; and providing education to hospital patients.

Essential Duties and Functions:


  • Performs in-house laboratory testing in accordance with SF SPCA Veterinary hospital procedures and protocols
  • Prepares lab samples and acts as a liaison between the outside Diagnostic Labs and SF SPCA
  • Ensures that all lab results are promptly provided to the doctors in order to inform clients
  • Documents all duties, logs lab tests, maintains equipment logs and updates medical records
  • Performs daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of lab equipment including performing quality controls and repairing equipment as necessary
  • Maintain patient records by accurately recording treatments and test results in patient charts, computerized records and logbooks
  • Maintains lab inventory and supplies
  • Assists with maintaining hospital equipment by performing regularly scheduled maintenance for assigned equipment


  • Dispenses and distributes medications and provide drug information to clients
  • Takes prescription refills in person and by phone, obtains veterinarian approval, communicates prescription refill status to clients, provides client with appropriate education relating to the drug(s)
  • Forwards prescriptions to outside retail pharmacies when necessary
  • Ensures that the hospital is following current regulations regarding the labeling and dispensing of medications.
  • Prepares medication charges
  • Ensures medications dispensed and/or prescribed are accurately recorded in client medical records
  • Maintains pharmacy inventory and supplies

Customer Service

  • Provides the best client service possible at all times, to both internal and external clients
  • Assists clients in person and on the telephone in a manner which demonstrates the Society’s interest, care, and concern for the people and the animals we serve
  • Handles problems relating to customer complaints in a tactful and courteous manner
  • Maintains the confidentiality of all information
  • Communicates skillfully and effectively with culturally diverse clients, staff, and volunteers


  • Minimizes waste and maximizes cost saving when possible
  • Enters charges and invoicing to patient accounts
  • Works to improve skills as assigned and directed by the Vet Tech Supervisors, Veterinary Technical Coordinator and Nursing Care Manager
  • Uses the SF SPCA Core Values as a guide for behavior and when making decisions and addressing problems
  • Practices and encourages the humane treatment of animals
  • Promotes donation and giving opportunities as appropriate
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Vet Tech Supervisor, Vet Tech Coordinator, Nursing Manager or Doctor as needed


  • Works cooperatively with all volunteers and recognizes the talent and commitment they bring to the Society


  • Ensures a safe work environment, following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practices
  • Takes immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk
  • Maintains a clean, healthy, and sanitary work area; follows all pest and rodent control protocols. Participates in keeping the SF SPCA campus clean and well maintained

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Regular standing, bending, stooping and crouching while seeing patients
  • Regular sitting at computer stations and operation of electronic equipment to complete job duties
  • Regularly moves about the campus to coordinate work
  • Frequent lifting, pulling, pushing and carrying animals weighing up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation
  • Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in kennel area
  • Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals
  • Consistent exposure to animals in the workplace and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available

Education and Experience (Required):

  • California or National pharmacy license preferred
  • 2 years college education with an emphasis in science and math or comparable work experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in math to interpret weights and measurements accurately
  • Must be available to work weekends, nighttime, holidays and overtime as needed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the San Francisco SPCA
  • Understanding of standard veterinary terminology, procedures and animal health issues, and the use of veterinary pharmaceuticals
  • Knowledge of proper laboratory sample handling
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and ability to master veterinary software and medical reporting
  • Ability to communicate in a professional, pleasant, respectful and courteous manner at all times
  • Organized, efficient, detail oriented with the ability to produce neat and accurate work, and the ability to handle confidential information with sound judgment
  • Ability to work closely and cooperate with veterinarians, technicians and their assistants
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize
  • Ability to respond efficiently during medical emergencies and to effectively follow direction from senior technicians and doctors under high-stress situations


Salary and Benefits:

The starting salary for this position depends on the length and breadth of experience. Part-time positions (20+ hours) are eligible for paid time off and holiday pay, medical, dental & vision insurance, life insurance, long-term disability, tax-deferred retirement plan, pre-tax commute expense deductions, discounted veterinary care, employee discount on retail, pet supplies, and dog training classes.
