Summary:

 

The Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for managing and executing community and donor events, seeking new opportunities for outreach, and improving on the effectiveness of existing events. This position is part of Marketing and will work cooperatively with the team to ensure that the overall marketing event strategy is cohesive and that the mission is being supported. The Specialist will be responsible for developing and maintaining budgets, executing communication plans, creating marketing materials, contributing to publications, and acts as a liaison with departments for operations and logistics. The Community Engagement Specialist works with many different constituents and staff at all levels in and outside the organization.

 

Essential Duties and Functions:

Planning

  • Create and implement annual outreach plan
  • Attend relevant community meetings
  • Present SF SPCA program opportunities to new partners each month

 

Event Management

  • Collaborates and executes or independently manages events throughout the year and across the agency
  • Assists Marketing Manager with projects, planning, and events as needed
  • Help establish and manage event budgets and insure that events have a sufficient return on investment
  • Conduct annual audit of events
  • Coordinate conferences and workshops
  • Prepare and present animals for radio and TV appearances

 

Fundraising Campaigns

  • Engage with local businesses to create mutually-beneficial partnerships
  • Assist social media campaigns that increase philanthropic support of the SF SPCA

 

Marketing/Communications

  • Maintain relationships with existing community and corporate partners and cultivate new ones
  • Help coordinate and develop marketing materials for programs across the agency
  • Help execute various marketing/communication strategies and projects
  • Write stories and articles for publications, social media, and other channels as required
  • Support the Marketing team , updating marketing calendars, etc

 

Customer Service

  • Practice and encourage the humane treatment of animals
  • Provide excellent customer service to clients, volunteers, and staff while actively promoting our mission, specialty behavior services, programs, classes and events
  • Promote donation and giving opportunities as appropriate

 

Volunteers

  • Works with Volunteer Services to recruit volunteers to assist with events and other marketing programs
  • Coordinate and supervise volunteers needed for the successful execution of events
  • Work cooperatively with all volunteers and recognize the talent and commitment they bring to the Society

 

Safety

  • Ensure a safe work environment; following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practices
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk
  • Maintain a clean, healthy, and sanitary work area; follow all pest and rodent control protocols
  • Participate in keeping the SF SPCA campus clean and well maintained

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in an office setting within an animal shelter and care facility
  • Regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment
  • Frequently lifts, carries and positions objects weighing up to 30 pounds when moving supplies and managing special events
  • Typically stands, bends, stoops and crouches while working special events
  • Regularly moves about the campus to coordinate work
  • Occasional weekend and evening work
  • Consistently exposed to animals in the workplace and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available
  • Musty have valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and be willing to drive Sprinter van
  • Reports to the Marketing and Communications Manager

 

Reporting Relationship:

  • Reports to the Marketing and Communications Manager

Education and Experience:

  • BA/BS with preferred emphasis in communications, journalism, public relations or related field. Equivalent combination of education and work experience will be considered.
  • Minimum two years of experience in event planning, fundraising, marketing, and/or communications.

  • Strong project management skills, including ability to balance multiple projects, interdisciplinary teams, and complex logistical issues

  • Experience working with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Demonstrated success in working with social media
  • Ability to work with a variety of donors and prospects
  • Sound judgment and ability to exercise complete discretion when dealing with confidential information
  • Extreme flexibility and adaptability, a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit to accommodate broad responsibilities and shifting priorities
