Summary:

The Clinic Assistant is a member of the Pacific Heights Campus Hospital Nursing Team. This is an entry level position that supports the Pacific Heights Nursing Team during peak Emergency Hours by providing support services. This shift works swing hours, from late afternoon bridging past midnight.

Essential Duties and Functions:

Animal Care

  • Provide water and nourishment for all patients as directed by medical staff
  • Participate in stress and disease reduction efforts through purposeful and compassionate handling and placement of animals
  • Assist with animal treatment and care under direction and supervision of medical staff.

Facility Care

  • Follow established disease control protocols to clean, disinfect, and maintain shelter apartments, kennels, cages, and general areas on a daily basis
  • Clean and prepare surgical instruments and equipment, including the endoscopy equipment
  • Clean surgical suite between cases and at end of day.
  • Maintain and clean treatment area and patient housing according to standard cleaning and infectious disease protocols
  • General janitorial for the Pacific Heights Campus Hospital Levels
  • Operate laundry and dishwashing equipment
  • Restock treatment areas with supplies and equipment
  • Maintain equipment in working condition, report equipment or supply needs to supervisor

Client and People Care Duties

  • Maintain sanitary, safe, and pleasant surroundings for clinic patients, staff, and the public at all times
  • Cultivate positive client ,volunteer and coworker relations through professional, courteous, and educational interactions

Safety

  • Ensure a safe work environment; following all safety guidelines, including PPE, and modeling safe work practice
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a kennel/hospital setting
  • Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing stairs, walking and, standing on feet 8-10 hours per day while performing job functions
  • Exposure to disinfectant solutions when cleaning
  • Exposure to various weather conditions when working outdoors
  • Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations
  • Consistent exposure to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available
  • Regular sitting at a computer workstation 1/2 an hour per day to read / respond to work e-mails
  • Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals

Reporting Relationships and Contacts:

  • Reports to Veterinary Technician Supervisor

Qualifications (Required):

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Available to work weekdays, some weekends and holidays as needed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the San Francisco SPCA
  • Team player, able to work in a fast-pace environment and multi-task
  • Compassion for animals, comfortable working in the shelter environment and willing to accommodate animals in the work place
  • Knowledge of animal breeds and behavior helpful
  • Basic veterinary medical terminology a plus
