Summary:

The Pharmacy Associate provides critical support to hospital staff and patients. This position is responsible filling prescriptions; maintaining inventory; creating invoices and taking payments for prescriptions and providing education to clients.

Essential Duties and Functions:

Pharmacy

  • Prepare prescriptions accurately and record prescription details in client medical records
  • Take prescription refill requests in person, by fax and by phone, obtain veterinarian approval, communicate prescription refill status to clients
  • Forward prescriptions to outside retail pharmacies when necessary
  • Dispense medications to clients, explain use and methods to administer medications
  • Dispense and distribute medications and provide drug information to the hospital staff
  • Ensure the hospital is following current regulations regarding the labeling and dispensing of medications.
  • Maintain pharmacy inventory and supplies
  • Minimizes waste and maximizes cost saving when possible
  • Contact manufacturers for technical support for doctors
  • Complete Adverse Reaction Reports
  • Track controlled drugs in compliance with state and federal laws
  • Coach and mentor pharmacy staff

Customer Service

  • Provides the best client service possible at all times, to both internal and external clients
  • Assists clients in person and on the telephone in a manner which demonstrates the Society’s interest, care, and concern for the people and the animals we serve
  • Handles problems relating to customer complaints in a tactful and courteous manner
  • Maintains the confidentiality of all information
  • Communicates skillfully and effectively with culturally diverse clients, staff, and volunteers
  • Complete sales transactions, check clients/patients out of appointments and hospital and prepare daily sales reports

General

  • Enters charges and invoicing to patient accounts
  • Works to improve skills as assigned and directed by the Pharmacy Supervisor
  • Uses the SF SPCA Core Values as a guide for behavior and when making decisions and addressing problems
  • Practices and encourages the humane treatment of animals
  • Promotes donation and giving opportunities as appropriate
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Pharmacy Supervisor as needed

Volunteers

  • Works cooperatively with all volunteers and recognizes the talent and commitment they bring to the Society

Safety

  • Ensures a safe work environment, following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practices
  • Takes immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk
  • Maintains a clean, healthy, and sanitary work area; follows all pest and rodent control protocols. Participates in keeping the SF SPCA campus clean and well maintained

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Regular standing, bending, stooping and crouching while seeing patients
  • Regular sitting at computer stations and operation of electronic equipment to complete job duties
  • Regularly moves about the campus to coordinate work
  • Frequent lifting, pulling, pushing and carrying animals weighing up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation
  • Exposure to disinfectant solutions when in kennel area
  • Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals
  • Consistent exposure to animals in the workplace and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available

Education and Experience:

  • License RVT or Pharmacy Tech preferred
  • Veterinary Experience preferred
  • 2 years college education with an emphasis in science and math or comparable work experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in math to interpret weights and measurements accurately
  • Must be available to work weekends, holidays and overtime as needed

  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and ability to master veterinary software and medical reporting

  • Organized, efficient, detail oriented with the ability to produce neat and accurate work, and the ability to handle confidential information with sound judgment
  • Ability to work closely and cooperate with veterinarians, technicians and their assistants
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize
  • Ability to respond efficiently during medical emergencies and to effectively follow direction under high-stress situations

The starting salary for this position depends on the length and breadth of experience.
